Coppice Barn, near Chichester, was converted into a luxury house, in the early 80s, and obviously all the exposed oak beams were then painted/stained dark brown (as was still thought fashionable at that time)
We were able to lightly grit blast the wood, back to the natural colour. Please click on each photo, to enlarge the picture, so you can see how much of the detail is revealed. Also, have a look, to see how little damage is done, to the surrounding surfaces.
Also, please look at the floor in the middle photograph on the right. Ok, there IS a bit of mess and dust, but it cleans up! If you really feel you cannot tolerate this level of mess and disruption, then perhaps you should get another company in, with their ‘Mess Free Process’, which usually mean they paint them brown!
Even if they do look, almost oaky, you might be spending years explaining why the beams were painted, to ‘Look like oak’ rather than actually having them stripped.
I am not sure how English Heritage would have reacted, after the fire at Windsor Castle, to a suggestion to paint all the 1000 year old timbers, brown!
We were not allowed to take photographs of the work at Windsor Castle, but there are ones available, on line, of the refurbishment of The Royal Kitchen, the main section we worked on.
