SPECIALISTS IN RESTORING THE NATURAL COLOUR TO OAK BEAMS, BRICK AND STONE.
APPROVED CONTRACTOR WITH LOCAL COUNCIL HERITAGE / LISTED BUILDINGS DEPARTMENTS.
Although we are only a very small company, (and content to stay that way), we have over 30 years experience, and have been engaged several times, at Windsor Castle.
As well as cleaning up all the fire damaged beams, brick and stonework, after the fire (we were there for 9 months!), we have cleaned/stripped the Pool Room, The Royal Stables, and various buildings on the site. Obviously the majority of my work takes place on much smaller properties! Probably 75% of our work is done on listed properties, and it naturally follows that any work we do, is done with great skill and care.
Some organisations, such as the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), have expressed reservations about abrasive cleaning and stripping, and, following their advice, some Local Authority Listed Buildings Officers say it is not allowed. Having seen the results of unprofessional and careless blasting, I can understand this sentiment! The wrong type of abrasive, or simply too much pressure (used to speed things up) can pit the wood, and raise the grain, on even the hardest beams.
Our aim is simple. To clean, or strip the beams or surfaces, so there is no trace that they were ever painted, or blasted.
If this is achieved, there can be no argument against the process. Painting beams black, is incorrect. It only started in Victorian times. The only genuinely blackened beams, were the top of rafters, which got covered in soot, when there was just a hole in the roof, and no fireplace/chimney. (Visit Weald and Downland Museum, Singleton). These I tend to leave, as they have historic value.
We have had potential customers, who have run in to problems with their local Listed Buildings Officer, but I have been able to provide recommendations by Senior Historic Buildings Officers, as well as a bit of name dropping about Windsor Castle, etc, so I have always been allowed to undertake the work. Sometimes, sceptical officials have demanded a sample, but, once they have seen the result, I have always been allowed to continue.
There are a couple of other local companies that I know, who can do a good job, and I will always try to be competitively priced against them. You are welcome to get several quotes, and there may be cheaper grit blasting companies, (as well as significantly more expensive!) but, as many of the properties we work on, are hundreds of years old, my customers are prepared to pay a reasonable amount, to have the work done, as carefully as possible, by operators who have worked on some of the most famous buildings in the country. Obviously our quotes are free, so you have nothing to lose by giving me a call.
If you are still unsure about cleaning/stripping your beams, brickwork or stone, then I can suggest this. If, as soon as I start blasting, you are not satisfied with the result, then I can stop, pack up, and leave, without charge! This has never happened, but it should give you the assurance to know you will be getting the desired result.
We are ideally located to cover most of Surrey, West Sussex, and East Hampshire, and can travel further, when necessary!
